Opened in 1995, the Tees Barrage is as impressive a feat of engineering as the famous Transporter Bridge. The barrage was built to improve the river's watersport's facilities by stabilising a stretch of the river which was previously tidal. Four massive flood gates, each weighing fifty tonnes, are operated by hydraulic pistons. They make sure the river upstream stays at a constant level.
As part of Teesside's regeneration the area surrounding the barrage was landscaped. There are facilities for rafting, water skiing, kyaking and other watersport's. last updated: 25/11/2008 at 15:12 SEE ALSOYou are in: Tees > Places > Places Features > The Tees Barrage 5 DAY FORECAST
