    Breakthrough!

It's a lovely line from Jordan Thompson and Luke Wells prods forward and snicks him through to the keeper.

The relentless pressure from Yorkshire's quicks this morning has paid off.

    Warks v Northants 22-0

Northants should probably have won a couple of games already but a failure to ram home excellent positions against Gloucestershire and Essex added to a hefty defeat at Surrey and it’s an average start to the season for them.

Champions Warwickshire drew at Lancashire last week and have chosen to field at Edgbaston.

30 minutes gone and no wickets in Division One.

It really has been a season for the batters so far!

Is that good news for England with their Test series against New Zealand getting under way three weeks today?

Tom M: Essex fan here. Why is there a rest week in the Championship? Surely with schedule pressure from four formats teams could manage after a four day break to put a team together and use that extra week for playing cricket in prime conditions and not on Halloween.

As Gloucestershire, and others, will testify Tom, the schedule is tough enough with all these back-to-back games.

It’s often only one proper day off when you factor in recovery and travel.

Do we really want the premier competition to not feature the strongest XIs?

A maiden apiece for Jordan Thompson and Haris Rauf.

    Kent v Surrey 27-0

Ryan Patel is off to a flier for Surrey.

    Glos v Som 16-0

It hasn’t been the start to the season Gloucestershire were after with two draws and three defeats.

    Injuries have certainly not helped.

They used 19 players across the first five games and have been forced to call in three loanees to play this week.

One of whom - Zak Chappell - has taken the new ball after the Glosters chose to field.

But no joy in the opening 20 minutes at the Seat Unique Stadium.

It's a first meeting of the campaign for these two old foes.

Both have made unbeaten starts - a season in which they'll both have ambitions of lifting the County Championship crown.

Joe Root lines up for Yorkshire against his mate James Anderson in Red Rose colours, but we'll have to wait a while to see them square off as Lancashire are batting first.
