Wouldn't it be fine if everyone could go back to using horses. I often think how nice our island would be without motor vehicles.

Hmm, so many tractors used as shopping vehicles and not many of them roadworthy even less taxed, then again how many people do you pass each day having a long mobile phone chat whilst going about their business? and how many of them are lorry drivers, driving one handed.....answer, too many!!!!

We have just returned from Uist what a beautiful place we travelled through the islands and highlands and traced my partners roots on Uist and Lewis she is a Mc Donald we found a 2nd cousin on usit it was a great trip we will return

Horses are not a primitive form of transport at all at all. They are the ecologically friendly future of transport. What will we do when oil etc runs out? We can use what took millions of years of evolution - the Horse. It virtually disappeared from these islands within a generation with the introduction of these new fangled tractor things. Did you ever hear of Eachan the Each running out of oil or cracking a cylinder head casket? Just give Eachan (the trusty steed) a few oats and away he would gallop to the Coop for the Daily Record. None of your fancy Guardian newspapers in my day.

Hi there! I used to work at the lochmaddy hotel for two months in 2002 and had the most incredible time of my life on your island. Everytime I get caught up in the rush of modern life in south africa, I think back of the quite and peace of your island! Make sure you keep it that way for many years!

My wife and I have set up a support group for women from any kind of non European ethnic background who are in long term relationships with British men. We know from our own experience that these women suffer from alienation from their own culture as will as difficulties fitting into Scotish culture. Living it remote areas like the Western Isles the problem is perticularly acute. on behalf of farmer jack I will inform everyone why it takes so long to get such things as tractor parts it takes about a week for the items ie (tractor parts) to come onto the island usually from Inverness then it sits in uist parcel service garage for the other 5 months and three weeks!!!

I'm very fond of tractors, however I'm trying to find someone on line that lives in North Uist and is willing to visit an old lady at Tranaid on my behalf. Sorry to be so brass necked but I dont like people in nursing homes feeling lonely and I sometimes did that when I went to Islay on somebody's behalf. It brightens up life and it makes us feel better too. Anybody willing?

Hello FarmerJack, Last year my wife and I stayed for 2 weeks in a cottage on a working croft at Malacleit. I am sure you must know the farmer there, he also does a bit of work as a BT engineer. I have never seen such a collection of spare parts for every imaginable piece of machinery, in his store. He has probably got a spare Auld Bessie let alone a spare cylinder head. We shall return to your beautiful friendly island soon.

Did someone not take over from Gordon Taylor? He used to take all sorts of items from Inverness in his lorry when doing the bread run. The shopkeepers couldn't get to their bread and rolls until he offloaded all the batteries, exhausts, tyres and other different things he took over for the crofters. Good luck with Bessie. Do any of you actually believe "FarmerJack" exists?! In all my years I have never heard a CROFTER reffering himself as a FARMER, not least I have only once seen a tractor being used to go to the shops!
