Anne's Party

What a night Friday Night was. It was a night when Lismore must have sank a couple of inches due to the number of people on the island. It was a very busy night at the Hall.

Anne's farewell started with a "concert style" opening act, with the Island's children giving her a heartwarming show. I wish I could tell you more about this - but I was travelling up from Stirling with Deirdre and didn't arrive until 10pm. Maybe I'll be able to persuade someone else to blog on this part of the night.

The "interval" was also entertainment in itself. The Ladies of the Island having cooked and baked until surely all cupboards and most of Tesco's shelves were bare. Tables groaned under the weight of all the food and people were heartily encouraged to get back up and get something to eat! I think a lot of NY resolutions of sticking to diets etc were broken on Friday night.

I know I heard a "box" being played throughout the interval, but have no idea who was playing it as by this time, I was behind the bar with Cathy K.

The dancing started, with Ross McP back again after his NY session. John McC I think had been warned by most islanders "Don't be telling the man to stop playing if we're up for a STW".

Not that John had much chance as he was "On Duty" making sure that everyone got a drink from his Mum and Dad.

I left and got home (walking down to the pier to clear my head) around 3am. And have to say I was very impressed with myself when I was up to catch the ferry to Oban in the morning.

There was another couple on the ferry that morning - they'd been staying at BaliG and had decided to call it a night/morning at 5(ish).

All in all - a great night.

Back to normal?

I'm back to normal (no comments on this please), after heading to St Andrews on Wednesday of last week. I stayed at the Rusacks Hotel - in Bobby Jones' Suite! Talk about being spoiled.

My living room over looked the 18th on the Old Course, and of course the sandy beach.
Though I have to say that I'm definately a West Coast Girl. The sandy beach was great for my kite flying and just having a game of tig - and when the tide goes out - it goes out a fair way - but for as much as it looked like a picture postcard, it's not my beach! I need to see mountains, I need rocks, I need big waves crashing onto the rocks. I'm used to lines and lines of seaweed. I love looking in rockpools - but there was none of this on this beach.

What I did love though - was sitting up and watching that big moon reflecting silver on the sea.

The staff at the hotel were fantastic, the ambience of the hotel is great. To be honest - I didn't want to leave.

And now I'm back to normal..... Auld Claes and Porridge........

Sunday Coming......

I'm heading to Fintry this Sunday to meet friends from both Fintry and Gargunnock there. Its the "Annual Forth & Endrick Singles Pool Competition". Otherwise known as the Annual Drinking Spree!

Its a grand time, its mainly the guys who play pool, the women all sit, drink, chat and catch up with the world.

There is a book being run already - not on who will win the competition - but rather on how long Kenny will stay awake/sober for this year.

The "Day" (starts at 12 finishes when it finishes) always ends with a game of "Killer". Do you know Killer? Everyone who wants to play puts a specified amount in the pot, then a board is written up with everyone's name and three lives attached to the name. You play down the list, and if you pot a ball, you keep all three lives, if you miss a ball, you lose a life. When all three lives have gone - you're out the game.

Mind you - If I remember right you get two shots off a break. It's technical - and I'll probably be sitting in the corner with a drink and chatting....

Maybe you guys over in the Coll Bar can clarify "Killer Rules". Then perhaps I'll shock a few folk by knowing what I'm on about!

My Gran

Now a lot of folk on the island know "Granny Wood". She's Gran to nearly everyone - not just our family. Gran is an amazing woman, a lady who's in her 80's but had up until the latter part of last year the constitution of a 60 year old.

Why the change - well Gran and Great Aunt Annie (her sister) were getting ready to leave GAA's house when Gran heard what sounded like a car alarm. GAA recognised it for what it was - a smoke alarm going off in her neighbour's house.

Gran - being Grand despatched GAA to phone the Fire Brigade, an ambulance, and to get another neighbour to help, while she managed to jimmy her way inside the security chained front door, and head up the stairs into the smoked filled flat.

To cut a long story short - Gran spent a week in Hospital - at the insistence of the Fire/Ambulance guys - not at her insistence. They were worried about smoke inhilation and the Paramedics thought she might have had a small stroke while trying to carry out GAA's neighbour!

After a night in hospital however, Gran was issuing orders, Bring in my knitting, feed the budgie, check on GAA, mind you've got the dentist to go to on Tuesday - The usual Gran orders really.

Now Gran is back to being herself again, and recently she received a letter from the Fire Service asking her to come along to a presentation ceremony where they'd like to give her an award for saving a life.

The British Red Cross society - which Gran has been involved in since the year dot, also got in touch.

They've indicated that they'll also be at the Fire Station that day to present her with the Special Service Cross. According to British Red Cross person, this Medal isn't handed out very often, but we as a family reckon that if anyone person deserves it. Its Gran!

"Monthly" trip to the Pub

I head off tomorrow to North Berwick with work, and will be there until Friday.

Beth (her of the Birthday Blog) has decided its about time we all went and had a wee night in the pub (there's not one on the island so we have to catch the ferry to Port Appin for this).

I now have to try and calculate how long it will take me to drive from North Berwick to Lismore on a Friday.

I'm looking forward to Saturday though - after the week I've got this week, I'm going to sleep on Saturday until at least 4.30pm!

Online Fun

I've been getting sent a weblinks to so online games. Some of which are not my scene and others that are really addictive.

So I thought I'd post a couple of them here. Don't be blaming me though if you don't get any work done....
