My name is Pramila. I’m a Gujerati Indian. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya. I brought up my 3 children here. I teach at Dudden Hill Community Centre, and we’re a contented happy family.

‘Gopal Nu Paranu’ sings of a sweet little boy rocking in the cradle. His small sister has a very anxious time rocking the cradle and his mummy is so happy to sing a lullaby. Then the song says, ‘Your Daddy made a cradle for you and your sister is rocking you. Mummy is singing a lullaby and we love you so much.’

My father worked with wood so he used his hands and made us a lovely cradle. All of us children, my brothers and sisters and I, were raised in it until we came to this country. I’ve got 4 little brothers and my mum used to be very busy woman so she never have time to rock the cradle. Instead, she’s ask us to go and do the cradle. Sometimes when we weren’t in the mood, we’d run away to play instead so she’d take the cradle by the kitchen. She’s put a string in her toe and move her toe while she was cutting spinach and onions to make all the curries. That’s a good memory for me because I never realised just how hard she worked. Here in the UK, we get all the benefits where everything is already prepared for you in the shops.
