Profiles :: Distillers
The Distillers are a punk rock band remarkable for their charismatic frontwoman Brody Dalle.
Guitarist/vocalist Dalle (b. Melbourne, Australia) paid her dues on the local punk rock circuit with an obscure band, Sourpuss, before relocating to America in 1998.
Shortly after arriving, she found a kindred spirit in Detroit, Michigan-based guitarist Rose Casper. Soon thereafter, the other pieces to the Distillers puzzle neatly fell into place, as Kim "Chi" Fuelleman (bass) and Matt Young (drums) signed on.
A recording contract with the Epitaph Records imprint Hellcat followed shortly thereafter (a label run by Rancid's Tim Armstrong, who later married Dalle), resulting in the release of the band's debut album in 2000.
Despite the disc becoming a favourite among punk revivalists, the entire Distillers line-up then split-up, with two members (Fuelleman and Young) leaving to sign on with former X singer Exene Cervenka's new band, the Original Sinners.
New recruits Ryan Sinn (bass) and Andy Outbreak (drums) joined Brody Armstrong and Casper for the recording of the Distillers' second album Sing Sing Death House, released in 2002. The album featured the live favourite "Seneca Falls" and helped attract the attention of the major labels. Shortly after the making of the record Casper, troubled by drug addiction, left the band to be eventually replaced by Tony Bradley.
With Brody's marriage to Tim Armstrong falling apart, the band parted company with Hellcat and signed a new recording contract with Sire Records.
The excellent Coral Fang was released in October 2003.
