Profiles :: Fugazi

Fugazi Following the dissolution of 80s seminal hardcore band Minor Threat, singer/guitarist Ian MacKaye became involved in a few short-lived groups before forming one of the most influential post-hardcore outfits of the next decade: Fugazi.

Synonymous with the Washington DC hardcore scene, Fugazi formed in 1987, initially as a trio before Guy Picciotto joined the ranks as guitarist. Remarkably the band has kept the same line-up since, with bassist Joe Lally, drummer Brendan Canty, MacKaye on vocal duties, and Picciotto on guitar.

Over the last eighteen years, Fugazi have forged one of the most consistent and challenging discographies within the US underground. Although they have concentrated primarily on touring rather than studio efforts, each of their albums has gone on to sell more than 100,000 copies, produced entirely independently within their own Dischord Records framework. They have released seven albums to date, their first, 13 Songs in 1989, which spawned an alternative hit with 'Waiting Room.'

Fugazi developed a unique experimental sound based on syncopated rhythms - one that has earned them the monicker, the 'thinking person's modern hardcore band'. The strong emotional intensity of the vocal and lyrics has also had a profound influence on the post-hardcore and emo-scene.

Fugazi are known as much for their DIY values as their music. They've achieved mainstream success while remaining loyal to independent distribution values. In addition to releasing all their records on their own label, they stick to a policy of keeping album and ticket prices low, as well as maintaining a commitment to all-ages shows.

They were also among the first to object publicly to the macho ritual of slam-dancing. "We're about challenging crowds, confronting ourselves and them with new ideas and if I was a teenager now, I would not be doing a dance that's been going on for ten years."

Fugazi's own record of the time, Red Medicine, proved just as abrasive and disciplined an exercise as usual. In 1999, the band was filmed by Jem Cohen for the documentary Instrument. The attendant soundtrack album featured several unreleased studio tracks and outtakes. Their last album was 'The Argument' released in 2001.
