Sue Martini

Sue's interiors style is elegant glamour with a contemporary twist.

1. Who is your style hero?

Tricia Guild from Designers Guild for her phenomenal use of colour and its hues making them sing together and pop with amazing sophistication, she adds fabulous texture to her designs. Philippe Starck for his daring design. He reworks everyday objects into new modern pieces creating outstanding objects that also have a purpose and are timeless.

2. If you had an unlimited budget to spend on your home what improvements would you make?

I would knock down my kitchen/conservatory. The new layout would extend into my garden creating a seamless space between via a courtyard, I love the sunlight in a house and also the outdoors. I would make sure the space worked for all year round. The colour scheme would have a wow factor and all the fittings and appliances would be high end. I believe you can’t skimp on quality.

3. Would you have the room you created in your own home?

Yes as it is totally glamorous and inviting, it also has a calming colour scheme for a bedroom, the purple giving added richness.

4. What did you learn from taking part in ‘Your ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ In Their Hands’?

I learnt that if you pull together as a team you can literally achieve anything in a short space of time as long as you have researched and planned ahead.

5. What is your golden rule when it comes to interior design?

My golden rule is to have a good long look at the room, see which way the light hits at what time of day. You can then get a feel for the space allowing it to get into your soul. A silver rule is to make sure you keep the clients wishes in mind!

6. What is your DIY tool that you just can’t live without?

I couldn't be without my sewing machine as I love cushions and if I can’t buy exactly what I want, I can make my own unique designs.

7. What is your biggest DIY achievement?

My biggest achievement is my most recent which was a set of old drawers I painted up for my niece. I added graffiti style paintwork on the sides as she is a teenager! Some lovely bright colour handles were used and she loves it.

8. What is your biggest DIY disaster?

Haven’t really had any disasters, unless you count a bit of dodgy wallpapering years ago but that just teaches you to try harder or leave it to the experts.

9. If you could design a room in any building in the world, what room would you design and why?

A terrace on the roof of a small hotel in Amalfi, Italy. I would make the whole place into a boutique hotel, with the terrace as the piece de resistance. It would have amazing striped gazebos, a hot tub, plunge pool, day beds and comfy seating areas. The colour scheme would reflect the azure blue of the water and yellow for Amalfi lemons.
