6 artists that could be future Reading + Leeds headliners?

Don't mean to blow our own trumpets, but we weren't wrong this time last year when we . And we stand by our predictions that Royal Blood and Bring Me The Horizon are good shouts for 2017.

But what about artists that played this year? Any of them look ready to top the bill in the near future? We're suggesting the following six possibilities. Tell us if we're crazy, on the money, or if we've completely missed a dead cert.

1. The 1975

The 1975 - Reading + Leeds 2016 Highlights

The 1975 get the crowd moving with their blend of ethereal 80s alt-pop rock.

With The 1975, we're going to stick our necks out here and say it's not a matter of if, but when. They've got the ambition and fanbase, but do they yet have enough material to go head-to-head with a band that's been around longer than them? Soon they will. Pencil them in for 2018 or 2019, after they've released another album.

2. Imagine Dragons

The live performance pros bring the energy and take it to the next degree.

Being second on the bill on the Main Stage is basically like being interviewed by tens of thousands of people for the top job in the future. And how did Las Vegas's Imagine Dragons cope one peg down from the Chili Peppers on Saturday night? Just. Look. At. The. Crowd. Like The 1975, we think they'll headline one day, but not quite yet.

3. Boy Better Know

You can always rely on BBK to bring the noise.

Your dad will remember when the festival, long before it was twinned with Leeds, was called Reading Rock. Perhaps back then it might have caused a bit of consternation to have a non-rock headliner, but no longer. We've become genre-blind and having Boy Better Know at the top of the bill would please an awful lot of people. Are they ready? Definitely. Will it actually happen? Outside bet currently, we reckon, but they're just getting bigger and bigger, right?

4. The Vaccines

The Vaccines - Reading + Leeds 2016 Highlights

British guitar band favourites bring the fun with some surf-rock inspired rock n roll.

Fans of The Vaccines know that they have a bit of a gripe with major festivals sometimes playing safe with their choice of headliners. That tells us they think they're good enough to get top billing at a future Reading + Leeds, and they certainly had an excellent festival this year. But, let's be blunt, it's headliners that sell tickets. Would it be a risk for promoter Melvin Benn to book them as headliners? No, not if he had a couple of bankers on the other two nights.

5. Slaves

Slaves - Reading + Leeds 2016 Highlights

The English punk duo storm Reading with a typically energetic fun set.

They made it onto the Main Stage this year and looked completely fearless. Their performance was truly excellent and promoters across the country will have noticed. With the Kent duo, however, we reckon they're going to have to work harder than most bands to keep climbing the bill. Biffy Clyro-style, they're going to need to put in a few more Reading + Leeds sets as good as this year's one, but they won't mind that.

6. CHVRCHES

CHVRCHES - Reading + Leeds 2016 Highlights

The Scottish trio bring their brand of synth-pop to the Reading stage.

Only a fool would bet against CHVRCHES soon releasing a genuine world-slaying, multi-platinum mega-smash of an album - the kind of thing that would turn an already well-liked big band into a colossal stadium band. And when they do that, they'll climb just a little bit
