Vera Ruth Weights of Salisbury Road, Liverpool, became a Wren in 1943, aged 18. The book 'My Life in the Service', was a gift from her Aunt. In it, Vera not only recorded day to day events, but also lists of friendships forged, places visited and memorable dates, from her time of enlisting in 1943 to her discharge in November 1945.

8th September 1943
Rather exciting day, Italy surrendered, felt really happy. Went to
pictures with Jacquline in evening, arrived home 10.30 pm.
11th September 1943
Went to work at 7 o'clock in the morning. Was pouring with rain. We
were quite busy. Terrible day, never worked so hard. Went to the
pictures in the evening with Jackie, I fell over on the way home,
made a hole in a new pair of stockings, right in the knee. my unlucky
day.

25th January 1944
Went on duty at 9am. P.O. told me off for not arriving in at 1pm
yesterday, but my chit was made out till pm om the 24th. Ha ha ha.
Well there was nothing on all day. About 3.30
Irene brought an American Soldier up. he was a pen pal of hers. He
had just come to England. he had been fighting out in Africa. He said
it is tough out there.

Jerry called so we made a foursome and all went to the Royal for
supper, later went to the Forum to see Jean Arthur in
'Lady Takes a Chance'. Very good film. Made a date for following
Wednesday. His name was Frank, quite a nice boy. Irene was quite
thrilled at seeing him, his home is in New York.
25th December 1944
Xmas Day. Jackie gave me a powder bowl, it's very nice. And got
money from Mum and Dad. In the evening Jackie and I went to
Rialto it was awful to come home so we had a bit of a party. We had
some fun.
