Approaches was established in Plymouth on 24th October 1939.
It was moved to Derby House in Liverpool in 1941. |
Western Approaches was set up to assist the convoys of ships during
the Battle of the Atlantic.

War II lasted for 2,075 days>
The Battle of the Atlantic lasted for 2,073 days. It started when
the liner Athenia was sunk of the coast of North West Ireland.
During
this time:
Over
2000 Merchant ships were lost to a submarine attack in the North
Atlantic.
Over 30,000 Merchant Seamen gave their lives.
About 330 convoys in the Atlantic were attacked by U boats.
565 escorted ships and 234 stragglers were sunk.
1100 ships proceeding independently were also sunk.
96977 ships survived the crossing
