Listen: Ben Returns

Ben spoke to 成人快手 Leicester's Tony Wadsworth about his return and the affect his illness has had on his health, his family and his life.

Listen to the in-depth interview...

Ben says his sudden illness has come as a shock as no-one in his family suffers from heart disease, except his grandmother who recently had a heart attack.

He says he woke up in the early hours of that Tuesday morning with a pain in his arm and chest but initially thought he had indigestion.

He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

While in hospital he had to have three stents (narrow mesh tubes) put into his arteries, which he describes as the most frightening experiences of his life.

He says he鈥檚 been very lucky and has now had to re-evaluate his life.

He describes the effect his heart attack has on him:

"The way I describe it at the time was somebody was literally holding my heart and squeezing it with all their might."

Listen: A Wake-Up Call

Dr Angela Lennox talks to Ben about his experience. Listen to what she had to say...

She says it shouldn't happen to a 37-year-old and he was very lucky:

"Approximately one in three people don't make it through 24 hours."

She says stress is a factor in heart attacks and it should be a reflection point.

Listen: A New Start

Ben says his spell in hospital has forced him to make changes in his life and he is now looking for a new start...

"I couldn't bear the thought of my two young children growing up without a father."

He has to take a lot of medication as a result of his heart problems and takes five pills a day which he will have to take for the rest of his life.

Now he wants to get back to being his old self with a few major changes.

Ben has changed his diet and needs to lose weight but in moderation. He can't do anything to strenuous and is hoping to have a more relaxed outlook to life:

"I don't want to be defined as someone with heart disease. I don't want to and I won't be."

You can hear Ben every weekday morning between six and nine.
