UPDATE: 23 May 2008Just over a week after Breakfast presenter Ben Jackson was discharged from hospital, his producer, Kay Wright, and fellow presenter, Chris Baxter, went to visit him at home. Listen: Update on BenListen as 成人快手 Leicester's Kay Wright and Chris Baxter go to visit Ben...
Help playing audio/video Ben says he's doing well, although he's still feeling very tired in the evenings. He also has a slight limp when he walks as a result of having three stents (narrow metal mesh tubes) put into his arteries: "That was the worst bit of it all, that was the most painful bit and that's nearly gone now, but it is quite tender still." On the mendBen says he has to take a lot of medication as a result of his heart problems, and will be on five pills a day for the next year and then four a day thereafter. Ben Jackson and his son Son on a motorbike trip The doctor told Ben how the pills would work in a way he could easily relate to: "The doctor explained to me, knowing that I like cars and stuff, he said the tablets are like a rev limiter on my heart. "So my heart can't go so fast, but it has to pump stronger, which is what the exercise is to help as well. "It makes your heart fitter, but it won't over rev and end up back in hospital." Ben's also making an effort to eat more healthily and to include more omega-3 in his diet, which helps reduce the risk of heart disease. "I can't thank you enough"Ben's received lots of cards from listeners and there are over 80 messages on the bottom of this page wishing Ben to get well soon.
He says he's very moved by all the support: "I'm so touched, genuinely. Really, really touched, not only on the website, obviously, which are just amazing, but also people have been sending lots in to work that people have been bundling up and sending to me. "Hundreds to be honest, and they're just beautiful and I can't thank you enough." If you want to send Ben a Get Well Soon message fill in the box at the end of the page. BACKGROUNDAfter numerous texts and phonecalls from 成人快手 Radio Leicester listeners asking about the whereabouts of Breakfast presenter, Ben Jackson, he decided to tell his story. Ben woke up in the early hours of Monday 05 May 2008 with a pain in his chest: "I just thought, I'm having a heart attack, which was very frightening." Listen: Ben's Story成人快手 Leicester's Chris Baxter - a good friend of Ben's, they went to school together! - went to visit Ben in hospital so he could explain what's been going on...
Help playing audio/video Ben was taken to Accident and Emergency at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and after a series of tests was told he has Acute Coronary Syndrome. Investigating the problemDoctors investigated Ben's health further, and he had an angiogram on Tuesday 13 May. The British Heart Foundation's website has more about the procedure:
"An angiogram looks inside the coronary arteries. It can show exactly where any narrowings in the coronary arteries are and how severe they are. "It can also help decide what sort of treatment a person with coronary heart disease or angina might be." Ben was a bit nervous about it and had spoken to other patients about the procedure: "Everybody who's had it done says it's absolutely fine and no worries, however they keep saying 'you can watch it happening', and it's like 'no, can I just have a blindfold?'" His angiogram was successful though, and as a result he's had three stents fitted to correct the narrowing of the arteries. He's doing well following the procedure and went home on Wednesday 14 May 2008. Lifestyle changesBen is planning to do more exercise when he's well again, but he says he's never been one for sport: Ben on his recent motorbike challenge "I know I carry a bit too much weight, but not enormously so. "I don't go the gym and I don't do formal sport, but I thought I was a pretty active person." He's now looking to the future, and is thinking about changing his habits to include more walking. But other than natural concerns about his health, he says he's feeling OK: "I do feel tired, but other than that I feel fine." Still the same BenDespite his recent illness though, Ben's love of transport hasn't wained! "There was a moment when I was quite excited about being in an ambulance." Ben says he's glad to be back with his two boys, Kit and Felix, and he's looking forward to returning to the airwaves soon. He says he's been enormously touched by all the messages of support from 成人快手 Radio Leicester listeners.
