Update: Get Well Soon

After nine days in hospital for chest pain, 成人快手 Leicester's Ben Jackson has been sent home to recuperate. He wants to thank everybody who's sent him "beautiful" cards and messages of support. Write your 'get well soon' message for Ben here...

UPDATE: 23 May 2008

Just over a week after Breakfast presenter Ben Jackson was discharged from hospital, his producer, Kay Wright, and fellow presenter, Chris Baxter, went to visit him at home.

Listen: Update on Ben

Listen as 成人快手 Leicester's Kay Wright and Chris Baxter go to visit Ben...

Ben says he's doing well, although he's still feeling very tired in the evenings.

He also has a slight limp when he walks as a result of having three stents (narrow metal mesh tubes) put into his arteries:

"That was the worst bit of it all, that was the most painful bit and that's nearly gone now, but it is quite tender still."

On the mend

Ben says he has to take a lot of medication as a result of his heart problems, and will be on five pills a day for the next year and then four a day thereafter.

The doctor told Ben how the pills would work in a way he could easily relate to:

"The doctor explained to me, knowing that I like cars and stuff, he said the tablets are like a rev limiter on my heart.

"So my heart can't go so fast, but it has to pump stronger, which is what the exercise is to help as well.

"It makes your heart fitter, but it won't over rev and end up back in hospital."

Ben's also making an effort to eat more healthily and to include more omega-3 in his diet, which helps reduce the risk of heart disease.

"I can't thank you enough"

Ben's received lots of cards from listeners and there are over 80 messages on the bottom of this page wishing Ben to get well soon.

"Really, really touched, not only [the messages] on the website, obviously, which are just amazing, but also people have been sending lots in to work."

Ben Jackson

He says he's very moved by all the support:

"I'm so touched, genuinely. Really, really touched, not only on the website, obviously, which are just amazing, but also people have been sending lots in to work that people have been bundling up and sending to me.

"Hundreds to be honest, and they're just beautiful and I can't thank you enough."

If you want to send Ben a Get Well Soon message fill in the box at the end of the page.

BACKGROUND

After numerous texts and phonecalls from 成人快手 Radio Leicester listeners asking about the whereabouts of Breakfast presenter, Ben Jackson, he decided to tell his story.

Ben woke up in the early hours of Monday 05 May 2008 with a pain in his chest:

"I just thought, I'm having a heart attack, which was very frightening."

Listen: Ben's Story

成人快手 Leicester's Chris Baxter - a good friend of Ben's, they went to school together! - went to visit Ben in hospital so he could explain what's been going on...

Ben was taken to Accident and Emergency at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and after a series of tests was told he has Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Investigating the problem

Doctors investigated Ben's health further, and he had an angiogram on Tuesday 13 May.

The British Heart Foundation's website has more about the procedure:

"They keep saying 'you can watch it happening', and it's like 'no, can I have a blindfold?'"

Ben Jackson

"An angiogram looks inside the coronary arteries. It can show exactly where any narrowings in the coronary arteries are and how severe they are.

"It can also help decide what sort of treatment a person with coronary heart disease or angina might be."

Ben was a bit nervous about it and had spoken to other patients about the procedure:

"Everybody who's had it done says it's absolutely fine and no worries, however they keep saying 'you can watch it happening', and it's like 'no, can I just have a blindfold?'"

His angiogram was successful though, and as a result he's had three stents fitted to correct the narrowing of the arteries.

He's doing well following the procedure and went home on Wednesday 14 May 2008.

Lifestyle changes

Ben is planning to do more exercise when he's well again, but he says he's never been one for sport:

Ben's Bike Challenge - 17 April 2008

Ben on his recent motorbike challenge

"I know I carry a bit too much weight, but not enormously so.

"I don't go the gym and I don't do formal sport, but I thought I was a pretty active person."

He's now looking to the future, and is thinking about changing his habits to include more walking.

But other than natural concerns about his health, he says he's feeling OK:

"I do feel tired, but other than that I feel fine."

Still the same Ben

Despite his recent illness though, Ben's love of transport hasn't wained!

"There was a moment when I was quite excited about being in an ambulance."

Ben says he's glad to be back with his two boys, Kit and Felix, and he's looking forward to returning to the airwaves soon.

He says he's been enormously touched by all the messages of support from 成人快手 Radio Leicester listeners.

In the meantime, watch this space and keep listening to 成人快手 Radio Leicester 104.9FM for updates on Ben.

get well soon, we miss you in the mornings!

Hi Ben, miss your voice in the morning that disappears just as I hit Milton Keynes, where I work, on my journey from Leicester. You set me up for the day so greatly missed. However what fantastic hospital services we have to get you back to where you are, perhaps when your fit and back to work you could do something like a local hospital watch, looking at the various departments within the hospital and the people that work there from the bottom to the top. This would show that it is a huge team of many different professions and types of staff and that without any one of them you wouldn't have had the help you so rightly deserved. Get well soon and thanks to the staff for getting you back on the road to recovery.

rita(wigston)

Hi Ben.I've been meaning to send you an email and i heard that you are now at home.I have now completed my 'missionary work' after 5 years at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and you may have heard that i'm now the new Head of Stadium Operations at Leicester Tigers. Everyone here sends their best wishes and cheer us on in the GP Final on the 31st May. It's now my 4th week into the job and i'm really enjoying the role and working in Leicester again. I've got special responsibilty for the new Tigers stadium development which is due to start this July. As soon as you're up to it we'll do a series of regular 'New Stadium' progress update peices on your show. There's plenty of time as the whole project will take several years to complete. Anyway hope the recovery goes well and it's good that you are still keeping in contact with the station and the listeners. Speak to you soon. All the best,Charles.

Hi Ben, Hope you are feeling loads better now. I suffer from Heart Failure (not as dramatic as it sounds but still pretty scary when you are first told). You will no doubt get loads of advice, but my one serious comment is don't let it get you down, live life to the full - within whatever constraints the medics give you. Maybe you will have some "dark" fleeting moments but they will pass. We are really very lucky as leicester has one of the best Cardiac centres. Look forward to your return but in the meantime Chris is doing a great job.

Roy Sherriff

Hi Ben From experience I know you will be terrified for the next few months. Every twinge you get in your chest you will think the worst. I have been there myself. I had the same symptoms as you when I was 43. Pleased to tell you I am now 63 and still going strong. You had a warning, both you and I were lucky. think of it like that and you will be OK.

Penny, Kibworth

Hi BenI have spoken to you "off-air" in the past, and was very sorry to hear of your heart problems. I have worked at Radio Leicester on "Celtic Fringe" with James Mckeefry and Lisa Johnston, so I can picture you in your studio. My husband had a heart attack on 3 October 1996, and was in the LRI. He has had no further problems apart from angina which is easily controlled with gtn spray or tablets. I have a friend who has stents, and after a short time was back dancing with us. I would like to wish you well, and a quick return to health and to the "beeb" You have been missed so much.Best WishesGaynor xx

Hi Ben,We missed each other by a day.I had my "Battle of Anzio" on Monday -from ward 33a-result one artery blocked the other two ok.At this stage just taking the pills.I'am hoping the blocked one can be treated.I've just listened to your messages & I'am the same re high cholesterol but have normal blood pressure.I'am sure its stress thats the culprit as I'am sporty & eat well-except for dairy which I'am reducing.I forgot I'am nearly 58 which won't make you feel better as I guess you're in your 40's.What brilliant technology-the Siemens kit is & the rapid treatment -I think we know the outlook would be not so postive without this.

Geoff Rowe

I listen in every morning between 6.10 and 7.10. I wake up to Ben Jackson..literally. Any other presenter's voice on my alarm doesn't wake me. Better not tell him he's in my bedroom at that time in case it gives him more chest pains! Seriously, get well soon Ben, your tales of life in the Jackson household cheer me up in a morning, I'm a full time carer and don't always have a lot to smile about. Best wishes to the family too. Off to Minehead soon to be close to the steam railway, first respite break in 20 years.

Hi Ben. Your story rang so many bells with me. My husband had exactly the same problem in September last year and he was rushed into the LRI in the middle of the night. His angiogram showed blockages close to his heart. He had to have triple bypass surgery but was fit and well very soon after. All the very best for a very swift recovery! You'll soon be back to your normal self.
