Ben's Bike Challenge - 18 April 2008

Ben's Bike Challenge

成人快手 Leicester's Ben Jackson keeps YOU up-to-date with his diary of how his 1,300 mile challenge to John O'Groats and back is going. Listen and read on to find out! (NB: Photos sent in by Ben via his mobile phone)

It's a long road for 成人快手 Leicester's Ben Jackson.

He's taken up the challenge to ride to John O'Groats and back on his motorbike to raise money for the Ruby Rainbow Appeal.

Ben will keep YOU up-to-date on a daily basis with his diary of how it's all going on 成人快手 Radio Leicester 104.9FM, DAB and here on the website.

"It feels sad to be heading back out of Scotland particularly without dad in tow, but we have the wonderful A68 to Northumberland to look forward to."

Ben Jackson, Breakfast presenter

Listen: Day Five

Ben's heading south, back into England on his latest leg after Thursday's journey through the Scottish Cairngorms!

Amongst his latest challenges; nearly running out of fuel, catching a cold, and being involuntarily exfoliated!

He spoke to 成人快手 Leicester's Chris Baxter shortly after surfacing for another day behind the handlebars...

"Today's weather couldn't be more different than last night. We had a brilliant final run towards our hotel yesterday evening in bright sunshine, but today it's another grey and misty one.

"It feels sad to be heading back out of Scotland particularly without dad in tow, but we have the wonderful A68 to Northumberland to look forward to and as ever the bikes are running brilliantly.

"Everywhere we go people keep commenting on them. In fact we met one bloke who's got the same bike that I'm riding.

"It's been an amazing trip. It's been really testing at times, but the sense of achievement every time we get on top of a steep mountain, survive another blizzard or brave the wind on the motorway - is brilliant!

"Tomorrow is the final fall from Scotch Corner down the A1 towards home. It'll be nice to be back, but I'll really miss the time we've all spent together and the routine of riding that we build up everyday."

Listen: Day Four

Ben made it! He arrived in John O'Groats on Wednesday evening... but now, he's got to turn around and come all the way home!

With just one night in John O'Groats, it's a quick turnaround, as Ben expects to back in Leicestershire on Saturday.

After tucking into his full Scottish breakfast, he spoke to 成人快手 Leicester's Chris Baxter and later to Tony Wadsworth...

"I woke up today in time for another great breakfast. With dad heading off to drive home by himself in the back up car, we had to decide which essential tools and spares we could keep with us.

"The bikes are know stuffed with spanners, screwdrivers, oil and spare cables.

"We started to retrace out steps at 09:30. The bikes are running better than ever, mainly down to Jim who's been keeping them in perfect working order.

"We stopped off for lunch (pea and ham soup) at a place called The Storehouse. Just north of Inverness, which belongs to the brother of the man that owns the hotel at the Bridge of Cally.

"We are following the A9 all the way down to Pitlochry, where we will cut back across to the same place we stayed on Tuesday night (day two). Tomorrow back to England!

Ben Jackson's Motorbike Challenge - 16 April 2008

Listen: Day Three

Ben is now well and truly in Scotland, surrounded by beautiful white snow. He's even seen people skiing!

The riders have past the highest village in the highlands and Ben is talking about Whisky... of course he's NOT drinking it!

成人快手 Leicester's Tony Wadsworth caught with Ben to find out about their progress and how the Royal Enfields are coping with the challenge...

"The day dawned damp, damp and grey and we knew that the weather would throw everything at us today as we prepared to climb over the Cairngorms.

"The climb to Glen Shee was just amazing the bikes are working hard to pull us up to the ski area of Scotland.

"Needless to say there was still plenty of snow, so much so in fact that people were still skiing. I don't need to tell you how cold it felt, but the scenery was breathtaking.

"By the time we got to Inverness the sun had come out and the last 120 miles to John O'Groats was brillant. The road twisting and turning along the cliff edge which, falls away to the North Sea.

"Just after five we arrived at John O'Groats - took lots of photographs, met a South African that lives in Leicester and ate fish fresh from the harbour.

" seems incredible to have made it here knowing that tomorrow we turn around and do it all again. We also have to say goodbye to dad because he has to be back in Leicester on Friday."

Ben Jackson's Motorbike Challenge - 15 April 2008

Listen: Day Two

Ben's first day went without a hitch - well almost. He set off from Leicestershire on Monday morning on his bike, heading straight into a hail storm!

The first overnight stop was Darlington, from where he'll head to Scotch Corner, and the high road to Scotland!

Ben spoke to 成人快手 Leicester's Chris Baxter from his farmhouse bed and breakfast, but first a message from Ben's son Kit...

"Well, we had a great nights sleep and a fabulous breakfast. The sun is shining and the skies were blue.

"However, within an hour or so we were travelling through a blizzard in the heart of the Northumbria National Park. To say it was cold would be a major under statement, but we kept plugging through.

Fixing Jim's bike at the garage

"The bikes never missed a beat, which is more than you can say about it's riders.

"Before long though the sun came out again and we had a great ride to Edinburgh and over the Forth Road Bridge.

"So much so that we decided to take a longer and more scenic route, which is when the real excitement of the day began.

"We stopped in a little village when the stand on Jim's bike broke dropping the bike on it's side, which also broke one of the footpegs.

"Just as we were wondering where on earth we would find a welder, a lovely man came up to us and offered us the use of his little garage.

"It was soon fixed and within a couple of hours we were sitting at the bar of the Bridge of Cally Hotel.

"Tomorrow it's the final push to John O'Groats..."

Ben Jackson's Motorbike Challenge - 14 April 2008

Listen: Day One

The day is finally here after months and months of lessons, planning, talking and worrying about it!

The bike's been serviced, the route's been planned, clothes have been packed to cope with whatever the weather has to throw at them and they've even booked a hotel in John O'Groats.

On 14 April Ben headed off northwards on his motorbike designed in 1949 with Jim d'Arcy from Charnwood Classics, his dad and two Royal Enfields. 成人快手 Leicester's Chris Baxter caught up with Ben...

"After all the preparation I can't believe we actually sent off this morning. It took a while to dawn on me that this was actually the start of the run and not just another ride out on the bike.

"All the preparations were worth while mind you, because within about 10 miles we had already some rain, hail, and wind.

"The rain and hail was not so bad, but the wind was frankly frightening. Anyway we made great progress and the bikes are running brilliantly.

Ben Jackson's Motorbike Challenge - 14 April 2008

Jim making adjustments to Ben's gearbox

"Although a run like this wouldn't be so enjoyable if we didn't have to get the spanner out at least once, which is why when we arrived at our overnight bed and breakfast Jim started to take my gearbox to pieces to make a couple of small adjustments.

"We're staying a night at Lucy Croff Farm just off the A1 near Darlington.

"Must go... we've got a long day tomorrow, because we need to get from here to well north of Edinburgh before tomorrow afternoon.

"I'll speak to in the morning - wish us luck!"
