Is a cold pint of beer and a warm fire enough to attract custom today, or do pubs have to provide more? The Horse and Jockey, Manton, RutlandListen: Ben's visits The Horse and Jockey
Help playing audio/video The Horse and Jockey pub is located on the south shore of Rutland Water.
The proprietor and landlord, Jason Allen, describes it as a "quintessential village pub", with it's low ceilings, beams and two open fires. However unlike some traditional country pubs that have been forced to close, Jason says The Horse and Jockey has a unique selling point: "We're ideally located... We are actually the only main pub on the main cycle track. "We're a great refuelling station for eager cyclists that are looking for either a refuel in terms of wet, or indeed sustenance in terms of food." The Crown, Old Dalby, LeicestershireListen: Ben visits The Crown
Help playing audio/video The Crown pub in Old Dalby near Melton has recently undergone major refurbishments. The new owner has added a new restaurant area, doubled the size of the kitchen, made the cellar larger and increased the number of toilets. Back in the 1990s The Crown was renowned for it's restaurant quality food, as one of the first gastropubs in the county. But then it gradually slowed down and virtually closed it's doors until it was taken over by new management. Now it's trying to cater for everybody, from the foodies to the regulars who live in the village: "You can be a very food-lead pub and hope to attract people from outside the area, from miles around... "But on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday you need your village people to use the pub, and they do, which is great. "You can't predict what will happen but you just try and be all things to all people, and so far it seems to be working." The King Richard III, Leicester city centreListen: Ben visits The King Richard III
Help playing audio/video The King Richard III is tucked away near the new Shires development in Leicester city centre. It's just two minutes walk from The Clock Tower, but due to the original decor it feels like you've stepped into Victorian times. King Richard III pub, Leicester The landlady, Belinda, says they were keen to keep everything down to the Victorian wallpaper when they renovated the pub to keep its unique atmosphere. The pub hosts a number of sports clubs, including 11 darts teams, two pool teams and a horse racing club! She and her husband see their pub as a family unit, and they believe their pub will survive thanks to their loyal customers. She says she doesn't run her pub for the money: "We do it for love. We do it for the meeting people and the people that we meet along the way have been first class." The Swan in the Rushes, Loughborough, LeicestershireListen: Ben visits The Swan in the Rushes
Help playing audio/video The Swan in the Rushes is well-known for its large variety of beer and real ale. At any one time there are nine beers and five guest ales on offer, as well as a warm atmosphere and traditional pub food (like faggots and mushy peas!) David, who works in the pub, describes it as a town pub with a local atmosphere: "We tend to get the same crowds in over and over again. "They all come and meet their friends and we get a lot of lecturers and teachers. "It tends to be a meeting place rather than a pub where you get random strangers walking in off the street. Everybody knows everybody." last updated: 08/05/2008 at 16:16 You are in: Leicester > Places > Places Features > Ben in the Boozer |
