Your Story: Nanny at 21 years old, for James Logan

We had no bank account and no credit cards, so everything was done with cash, out of your weekly wage. Granddad Logan would be £9:10shillings. The rent was £2:10shillings. That left £7 to spend, NOT a lot of money, to spend on the coal, groceries, gas, electric, bus fares, to get granddad to work, and clothes, presents and anything else you can think of.

Usually, Mam did not go to work, they stayed at home to look after the children. Granddad Logan worked as a Guard on British Rail. I would take your dad and Uncle Lance to the park and the beach and go to see your great nanna and granddad Logan and Auntie Judith and Great nanna and granddad Furness and all of my brothers and sisters and their children, your dads cousins. There were a lot of them as I come from a family of twelve.

We met at my mother's house, (your great nanna Furness) we used to play with the children and laugh and talk to each other, then go home and make the tea. There was no phone or mobile just one, away in another street. No car, so we walked a lot.

I had a second hand pram but it was a big silver cross and it had a seat on the front to sit your dad on and Uncle Lance was inside. I could put shopping under the place where the baby was lying as it had a loose bottom. This was handy for shopping, nappies and baby's bottle. I will show you some old money; it was very different counting it then. There was 240 pennies in £1. The £1 was a paper £1 a bit like a £5 note today. There was 2 half pennies in 1 penny There were 3 pennies in a threepenny piece There were 2 threepences in a sixpence There were 2 sixpences in a shilling

There was 20 shillings in £1. There was 4 Half crowns in £1. There were 2 ten shilling notes in £1. The 10/- note was brown in colour but like a £5 note today. There were no computers at home but they had been invented and were the size of your kitchen and were in huge rooms.
