Your Story: Nanny at 21 years old, for James Logan |
|
We had a coal fire and no central heating; the bedrooms were very cold especially in the winter. Every morning you had to clean out the fire and light it again; it was very dirty and took ages to light. In the winter you put the ashes from the fire on the backyard to stop you slipping when you went to the toilet. The toilet was up the backyard, and the bath was under the bench in the small back kitchen, which had a gas cooker.
We had no fridge or electric kettle. The kettle stood on the gas cooker and it had a whistle that sang out to tell you when the kettle had boiled. This was to tell you to switch it off or it would keep on boiling till it boiled dry, or the gas ran out. We had a gas washer that you worked by pushing the handle backwards and forwards to swish the washing about. It heated the water if you lit it underneath, a bit like a gas ring today on the cooker.
It also had a mangle which you turned by hand to squeeze the water out of the clothes. This would make them dry quicker, and it was much easier than wringing them out by hand.
We had no fitted carpets, just pretty lino with rugs down, which you lifted and shook outside or put over the washing line and beat with a stick. (To get the dust out) We had no Hoover just a brush and shovel. We did have a black and white television but that may have been later than 1963, we did have a wireless though. To get gas and electric we had a meter which you put the money in and this let the supply through.
