Telling the time

It’s important that you know how to tell the time in Welsh.

Look at this clock. Notice how the face of the clock is split into two sections – the wedi (past) section – and the i (to) section.

Analogue clock with 'i' 'to' labelling the left hand side and 'wedi' 'past' labelling the right hand side

Two important points to remember:

  • Mae hi’nis followed by a soft mutation, eg:

Mae hi’n bump o’r gloch.

Mae hi’n bum munud wedi deg.

  • i(to) is always followed by a soft mutation:

Mae hi’n chwarter i ddau.

Mae hi’n bum munud i bump.

If you’re talking about specific times of the day, you may need to refer to the following:

Mae’r ganolfan hamdden yn agor am ddeg o’r gloch y bore ar ddydd Sul. – The leisure centre opens at ten o'clock in the morning on Sunday.

Mae’r caffi'n cau am bedwar o’r gloch y prynhawn ar ddydd Mercher. – The cafe closes at four o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday.

You may want to talk about how often you do something, eg:

Am faint o amser wyt ti’n defnyddio technoleg bob dydd? – For how long do you use technology every day?

  • tua awr bob dydd – about an hour every day
  • dwy awr bob dydd – two hours every day
  • mwy na dwy awr bob dydd – more than two hours every day
  • tair awr bob dydd – three hours every day
  • pedair awr bob dydd – four hours every day

Learn the expressions that are relevant to you, eg:

Dw i’n siarad â ffrindiau ar Skype am ddwy awr bob nos. – I speak to friends on Skype for two hours every night.
