Writing about your holiday plans

When writing or talking about a dream holiday in the future, you could use the conditional tense – the would tense:

  • Baswn i… – I would…
  • Hoffwn i… – I would like…

Notice how these are used in the following email from Dewi to his friend Owen.

Helo Owen,

Dw i’n meddwl mynd ar wyliau. Hoffwn i fynd i i wneud llawer o . Baswn i’n mwynhau dringo’r a hoffwn i ganŵio ar Lyn Padarn. Hoffwn i fynd i Zip World ym Methesda hefyd. Mae Eryri’n lle gwych ar gyfer gwyliau . Hoffet ti ddod?

Wyt ti ofn?

If you wanted to say We would…, We would like to…, you should change the – wn i at the end of the verb to – en ni.

  • Basen ni… – We would…
  • Hoffen ni… – We would like…

Question

Owen has decided to go to Snowdonia with Dewi and he wants to tell his family what he and Dewi would like to do there. Read the email again. Can you change the I expressions into we expressions? The first one has been done for you.

  1. Hoff wn i fynd yno i wneud llawer o weithgareddau awyr agored. > Hoffen ni fynd yno i wneud llawer o weithgareddau awyr agored.
  2. Baswn i’n mwynhau dringo’r Wyddfa a hoffwn i ganŵio ar Lyn Padarn.
  3. Hoffwn i fynd i Zip World ym Methesda hefyd.

If you wanted to use the negative, you should use a soft mutation and add ddim after the verb:

Fasen ni ddim yn mwynhau dringo’r Wyddfa.

Question

Dewi and Owen’s other friend, Matthew, is also invited on this holiday but doesn’t want to go. Read his reply.
