After her marriage, Mukherjee spent some time in Canada where she experienced racial discrimination and prejudice. By 1980 the family returned to the United States where they settled more happily. She taught Creative Writing at Columbia University, New York University and Queens College, before becoming a Distinguished Professor at Berkeley University.
