Isobel Armstrong, Professor of Literature at Birkbeck College, London University, believes that Kincaid's style is very fresh and witty:
| "Kincaid writes in a rather curt style. It's somewhat clipped and has an edge of sarcasm to it all the time: that watchful, observant precision.
Lucy is an extraordinarily powerful character who has
to fuel her ego to survive in a completely alien and isolated
and extremely lonely environment, being a mother substitute
for four little girls. And it makes her an extraordinarily
sceptical, critical outsider/exile figure because she
can make judgements and insights about the pretensions
and falsities of American society and the American dream.
She is critical of everything. Although very corroding,
the criticism is also very funny and witty. "
