| "I did not start writing as a feminist: I was a writer first. I wasn't very familiar even with the word feminism, this was in the 60s, I don't think it was very common in India as it is now. But I was writing about what I saw, what I felt, what I had begun thinking, and I was very uneasy about my own roles as wife and mother, which was all that I was supposed to be, and I knew I was not that. And so I think my writing came out of this, and that out of this articulation of ideas and thoughts that my feminism emerged"
