1993 she became the first African-American and the first woman
to read her poetry at a Presidential Inauguration - that of
President Clinton.
She has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize
for Poetry, has written television and film scripts and marked
her seventieth birthday (in 1998) with the publication of her
collected poems: Even the Stars look Lonesome.
