Aidoo
writes about strong women in a style which combines a mixture
of techniques. Although her first language is Fanti she writes
in English but her style is closer to the oral tradition than
the Western novel.
Isobel Armstrong Professor of Literature from Birkbeck College, London University,
| "I think that the oral tradition is very much one of taking the reader or listener along with you, not taking you through any elaborate preparation or elaborate description, but enabling the listener to be there inside a dramatic scene or confrontation. Just as, say, at the beginning of Changes you get introduced immediately to Esi's confrontation with the man that she eventually marries as second wife. It's a very sudden intense and dramatic way of communicating. That's what I think is so important about her work."
