The Top Deck, or The Deck as it's lovingly referred to by it's current regulars, and the crowds of old, is one of the largest venues for nostalgia in Teesside. As an intimate venue, it was always a great night… even after turfing out, the party didn't always stop, carrying on along the streets and the beach of Redcar. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Tees' Ged Robinson remembers fondly his summer of dj-ing there in the late 70's. He applied for the job after seeing an ad in the Gazette, and worked right through the summer, before moving to the Madison for two years. He remembers crowding outside after he'd finished work, getting what he describes as "the best burger ever" from the burger van, and then piling on to the beach to carry the party on. Ged Robinson Ged explains whey The Deck was so special. "You could wear what you wanted, it was quite relaxed. "The Deck was just a great place to come and have a dance and party, that is what is was all about, I used to record Top of the Pops and play out the videos during the night, so we'd be dancing to the video of the song. "Plus when Charles and Diana got married, we played the video of the wedding during the night to the dance music! Paul Anka sang Diana, and they loved it!" Do you remember listening to the classic disco upstairs? Ending the night religiously on "This guys in love with you" by Herb Albert? Or grabbing your mates to dance to "Shout" by Lulu? Or were you more of a downstairs dancer? With the female DJs and the new wave music, including of course The Human League? Did you share a burger with your future partner from THAT burger van, or were you the burger van man?! Either way we want to hear from you. What was the best night at The Deck? Let us know by using the box below, because we want to relive the good old days. Listen to Ged Robinson on Sunday evenings from 9pm though to midnight on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Tees.last updated: 04/04/2009 at 15:41 SEE ALSOYou are in: Tees > History > Local History > The Deck |
