Climate Change and The Croft.

I often wonder when Climate change is mentioned how many people are convinced as to its reality as a latter day phenomenon. As I look back to the seasional occupations on the croft, I can't help but wonder how much work could have been completd In such weather as we have knowledge of today.

In the month of March so many years ago part of required work consited of manuring the land and I remember seaweed being of consderable importance. It was then hauled from the shore in horse drawn carts which were emptied on the grassland in proportinate heaps, completely suitable for spreading later. A horse drawn cart would take five of those heaps and after many visits to the seashore it was surprising how the gathering increased. The spreading would take place later by hand using a grape and in surprising precision.

So what part did the weather play in all this? Good dry weather as required and indeed sunshine often did prevail. But with todays weather pattern many seasional tasks would be impossible compared with so many years ago. I am sure that many unbelievers would deem me old fhasioned and also too ready to believe what modern day weather accounts exist.

To all those who commented on my previous blog. Thanks, but I can't comment in return. There is something amiss with the system. I must get in touch with Carol.

When there is news you never mention it even when it directly relate to the topic you keep writing about. The real question is do you actually live on Tiree?

Anne from Argyll

Is it? Why?

Flying Cat from puzzled&confused

Planning permission given for a great big turbine on Tiree yet Island Wanderer didnt mention it. Like you I am puzzled flying Cat.

Anne from Argyll - turbine central

The Wanderer is most definately a Tirisdeach who has toiled on the croft for manys a decade.

Answering Anne from Argyll Exile

I was more puzzled&confused that you felt it necessary to ask the question in the first place,Anne from Argyll...we bloggers mention what we want to and don't mention what we don't want to. We are not a news service...

Flying Cat from purrsonal services

Ha, Thats funny.Come to think about it, if your a crofter are you are going to be at the computer blogging in the middle of the night with so little daylight during the winter. Its also hard to find any detail which only someone living on Tiree would be aware. Dispite this I am not conviced Island Wanderer is an exiled Tirisdeach

Sid from Glasgow

... and if I say I am a resident native of Planet Earth, I should hope no one would doubt my word. After all, I don't live in Roswell, NM. # By the way, I like Tirisdeach as term describing a native of Tiree. Nice sound to it. Like Collach.

Flying Cat. greetings. Yes I agree, we do talk about what we want, as has Island Wanderer. The constant topic of global warming yet not a squeek about this turbine. Island Wanderer does seem to be interested in this issue, dont you agree?.

Anne from Argyll

Puzzled: why would anyone wish to claim falsely to be a crofter from Tiree? Unless the person had gotten hit by a flying coconut during a cyclone ...! Which bring us, via circuitous route, back to Barney, but he is from Swithiod, not Tiree.

mjc from NM,USA

I was making the distinction between islandbloggers and our merry band of commentors: we, the bloggers, choose what and what not to post, and you, the commentors...comment on what we post.

Flying Cat from not agreeing with anyone

If ANYONE in IB is who they purport to be then half the island population are a crowd of looney bin candidates. On the other hand, if EVERYONE on IB is having a whale of a time living out hithertoo unsuspected aspects of their personalities (and FC, that is a deliberate use of the plural) then this probably cuts down on the potential looney bin candidate crowd by about 99%. Blog on!

Barney from Swithiod and wondering

I know it may be hard to believe........but even crofters retire and forgo their tenure. The Wanderer is contrasting both the weather conditions, and crofting techniques, now with those in his youth. My father also frequently reminisces about the better weather of his youth and the amount of outdoor manual work that went on "before the war" when it was definitely a case of work or want. Maybe the memories are rose tinted, but you cannot pour scorn on their opinions. Age brings experience - so thank you Wanderer for sharing your opinions and experiences.

Answering Sid this time from Still Exiled from Argyll

Flying Cat, well thats mjc from USA told but my guess is mjc will, like me, write whatever they want.

Anne from Argyll

Hear hear!

Flying Cat from agreeing with Still Exiled and Barney

and you, the commentors...comment on what we post. Flying Cat from not agreeing with anyone". You are having delusions (too much Botswana redbush tea), FC. It's only by accident that any contribution by commentators (some at least) bears any connection with the posting (which often as not has no relation to reality, fank you).

mjc from NM,USA

I know this chap as my wife and I visit beautiful Tiree at least 3 times a year. I can assure you all, he is and always has been living in Tiree. (Lucky him)
