Wind factory

I have read the post on and the comments, the recent issue of the RSPB mag SCOTLAND NEWS November 2007 gives a name, number and e mail to contact if you wish to make further protest about the Lewis wind Factory, I am afraid I cannot give this information here but if anyone is interested please e mail me via my website there is a link in my side bar and put 'rspb lewis' in the subject line, you could also try the link in my side bar to see if you can find a weblink, I can't and I suspect this is because it is new news, which is what 'news' is suposed to be,

My wee comment is whether it is wind or wave think about the creatures that will be murdered,

I used to be pro wind energy until I looked into it further and discovered the main aim is money from selling shares to companies that have no intention of cleaning up their act, so they buy green units to make their company meet the necessary percentage requirements, so it is all just window dressing,

Apparently even if all the wind factories that are planned go ahead it will be about 6% of our energy needs, lets face it this is just a blip and in 25 years those tubines will be obsolete, large rusting lumps of metal, am I the only one who sees this (the wind factories, not wind energy) as a pointless exercise in saving the planet,

Now if the island is sooo good for wind power why is there not help for individuals and small communities to have their own small wind turbines to provide some of the energy they need (without the sale of shares),

I can’t comment on wave power as I do not know much about what is involved,

No I am not expecting answers but constructive comments are welcome,

The issue of bird strikes etc is a complicated one as nobody, surely, wants to do anything that could directly hurt wildlife etc. But, what about the affect of global warming on seabird colonies, they're starving to death i think due to changes in the sea temperatures etc. A good example is that of a pal of mine who now catches sea bass off of Ness beach - that until very recently was a fish caugth off Devon and Cornwall. We need to do something to protect wildlife from global warming - lewis wind factory may not be the answer for many other reasons but we need to see the big picture when it comes to the impact of global warming on animal life.

Better idea still would be start with ensuring that Industry and individuals save wasted energy before we start on such a destructive, short-term projec as the wind factory. Ideally, the Islands should be a model of energy effeciency but while they talk about windmills by the hundred that will create a blot on the landscape the other hand is talking about making a marina in Stornoway to attract Southerners to fly up here at weekends!!!

Andrea from In front of the peat fire

I've made my position abundantly clear in two years of Island Blogging :-). No windfarms in Lewis.

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

I agree with you IT, and it is all to do with money, not saving the planet. I'm shocked at Peatstack's comment, I would never had thought that Peatstack had any pals ( LOL, etc.) and I'm getting a hint that Big AL, may well be against windfarms in Lewis, is it because they would block his "all seeing eye" ???

>> Â…seabird colonies, they're starving to death i think due to changes in the sea temperatures etc << and over fishing, >>.. - lewis wind factory may not be the answer for many other reasons but we need to see the big pictureÂ…<< I do and I cannot see how covering the UK in wind factories to produce less than 7% of our energy needs is helping when over 93% will still be coming from carbon producing materials, IF we are serious about global warming then surely it would be better to MAKE businesses ACTUALLY CHANGE how they produce their products and services instead of buying green units and just carrying on as before,

island threads from ness

Angela, I think one reason they want the wind factory is so they can say they are 'off setting' their carbon emissions from flying and carry on as usual,

seems crazy to me to turn this place into a wind factory to produce 'green' carbon free(whatever!!) energy when so many people here are legally allowed to still burn coal and and peat to chuck pollution back up into the atmosphere. Kindof hypocrytical dont you think??

Andrea, I am so sorry I wrote the wrong name when I replied to your comment and thanks for the alert to the marina I had not known of it before,

island threads from lewis

Arnish we know your stand and thanks for all the info on your blog, Tws, nice to hear from you,

island threads from ness

We all let the electric company burn coal to provide us with our electricity, some people use less electricity and burn coal themselves in their home, it evens out in the end, to me the hypocrite is the company that buys green shares to pretend it is doing something to help global warming, like the airlines selling 'off set' shares but making more fights, to help reduce global warming you CUT flights,

island threads from lewis

ooophs I seem to have left the 'l' out of the word flight,
