Tiny but perfect in every detail

Many visitors to Cumbrae seem to miss one of its most delightful locations, the Cathedral of the Isles. This tiny cathedral can seat 100 and is listed as the smallest cathedral in Europe. It lies a few minutes walk up College Street from the seafront and is set in idyllic surroundings. It is in use and there is a service every Sunday, although there is now no bishopric attached.

Hi Millport! I never knew there was a cathedral! We've stopped off at Millport a few times in the viking longship but we never seem to get further than the pub. Must try harder next time

Sunny, there's an entrance to the cathedral in College Street, about 200 yards (maybe less) from the Newton Bar. Mind you, churches were often used as places of safety during Viking raids so you might find the door barred! :o)

What can I say you all sound like old grumps. Millport was my childhood destination and I and my family loved every min of it. My great grandparents are buried there I have to admit Im still trying to find there names if any body can help my family names are Potter and Napier but there could be other names invouled my mum was christened there sometime around 1928 Mary Napier I have always loved Millport and cannot wait until I see the wee haven again. I remember Mrs Peacock, teacher at Cumbrae School, telling us that although the Cathedral was often quoted as the smallest in Europe it was only the chancel area that was the smallest. Can anyone confirm?

I worked abroad in the USA for Thirty Years and have travelled all over the US, but I cannot find anyplace to compare to Millport, I Now reside here permantly and to my American it is known as Alex Eden

When I was 15 in 1973 I visited Scotland for the first time and saw my grandmother and other relatives. A highlight of my trip was visiting Millport, my mother's summer vacation spot. George and Betty Watson hosted me and were so delightful in my stay at Millport. They are distant relative, but I am not sure how. Their sons Lawrence and Gerald were also there and Gerald and I rode around the island. They laughed at me because it was the first time this Canadian (Kanuk!) saw the ocean. This year, my 91 year old mother, 2 sisters and 10 year old son visited Millport. My son did not want to leave and suggested I should find a job there. I tried to contact any of the Watsons who were so kind to me, but had no luck. I heard they moved to Largs, but still no luck.I was told by the grocer at Millport that George and Betty moved to Largs, but no luck in contacting them. If any of you know them, please give my e-mail address. I work at Brock University near Niagara Falls Canada wbakker@brocku.ca or msmagoo1958@aol.com. I love Millport and Largs and hope to return soon. It feeds my soul!
