Summer's Coming

We had The Clansman back yesterday. She arrived early, but by the time the passenger ramp was unloaded she was back on the timetable. However she came back from Tiree early again. At least we won鈥榯 have to worry about being wait-listed for a couple of weeks.
In the hotel a very successful darts competition was organised, the organiser won it, finishing on double eleven, of all numbers!
The pool ladder also finished with fourteen players fighting to get their name on the trophy. It was the last night with cigarettes in the bar. The No Smoking signs are ready to go up and we are open to suggestions on how to recycle the glass ashtrays. They won鈥檛 fit through the holes in the bottle bank! As a life-long non-smoker I have mixed feelings about the ban. I鈥檓 not keen on stinking of smoke, but it doesn鈥檛 really bother me. I鈥檒l still have to sweep the floor, even if it isn鈥檛 covered in fag ends. I don鈥檛 feel I get paid enough to police the ban, and with smoking still allowed in England and Wales it will be a struggle all summer. Ultimately I believe in people making their own choices, not having them forced on them by men-in-suits. So it should be an interesting summer.

Did you have trouble with the ban? We were out both Sunday and Monday. Sunday night I didn't even notice the ban was in place until we were on our way home and I said in suprise to my friend that it seemed that no one was smoking in the pub and how nice it was not to be going home stinking of smoke and she pointed out that the ban has started! No one had even mentioned it. One of the old lads had a bit of a grumble about going outside to smoke on Monday as it's his pub but he got no sympathy. Some of the pubs here had refurbs after Christmas and brought the ban in early so their newly painted bars didn't get nicotine staines and their turnover has gone up. Every one of my friends who smoke said they were giving up when the ban came in and so far so good. Should save the NHS a fortune! It did seem a bit draconian when it was first muted but the majority of people I know have come round to welcome the ban. How did it go down on Coll?

I'm delighted by this ban, it should be a good summer of feasting for me and my mates! Years of lobbying has paid off at last.

Smoking positively encouraged at Fank.

My anticipated quiet Sunday night shift was wrecked by several non-smokers coming out to gloat, although the smokers were hard to find. Things were back to normal by Monday. The bar still looks a bit naked without the ashtrays, I've had a complaint that now there is nowhere to put dead chewing gum but it saves three minutes now I don't have to wash the ashtrays.

Nic, your bar didn't look empty to me at the weekend... with all the drinks on it I'm not sure where the ashtrays would have fitted. Quite funny watching someone sit with a fag in their mouth for a good half hour or so before actually getting round to going outside and lighting it. I'm in the trade in Glasgow and we've not had any problems with it so far albeit nightclubs tend to smell more of BO and alcohol soaked floors now!
