With more machinations than Machiavelli, ‘wheezes’ a-plenty and contacts at the highest level of government, top PR firm Prentiss McCabe returns to Radio 4 for a new series of Absolute Power.
Fresh from ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ2, the hit satirical comedy returns to its radio roots with Stephen Fry and John Bird playing the masters of spin, Charles Prentiss and Martin McCabe. True to form, the claret swilling colleagues are out to trip one another up as much as they are their clients.
They are joined by Alex Lowe playing Labour’s ‘man in the shadows’ Archie Hilditch, who now has a somewhat elevated position in the party, and Tom George who returns as the rather put upon graduate trainee and general office whipping boy, Clive – or ‘thing’ as Martin insists on calling him.
The scripts are written by Mark Tavener - the original creator and radio series writer – who is as sharply satirical as ever.
The masters of the image relaunch are still working in the shadows for New Labour, albeit slightly less enthusiastically than they have in the past. Martin, in particular, is finding it increasingly difficult to work for TB and decides that the time is right to be ‘brilliant, but fundamentally unsound’ and launches a book entitled ‘The Notion Of Nation’, which is part scathing critique of Britain under New Labour and part pub crawl.
They also find themselves representing the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ, although their campaign, telling the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ’s viewers that they are flatulent morons, doesn’t seem to be going down too well with the corporation; and Charles finds himself crossing the waters to the land of the dirty trick to join the presidential campaign. After all, the future of the free world depends on the president being re-elected and if anyone can spin W, Charles can.
