Where I Play:
I play in the Birmingham area where my role as a musician in the Afghan community here is a very good and very friendly one. It is also difficult because I can't play alone. My colleague, Zaki Wais, is our tabla player but he lives in Liverpool and has to come down for all our Birmingham-based celebrations and parties. He came down today just to make this recording.
People love the music and when we play they always start dancing which is always a good sign. Recently we played at a community centre to celebrate Eid, the Muslim New Year. It was a good party and our band played for 2-3 hours. Our parties consist only of music.
Now, for Afghani people in the U.K. I'm a little bit famous and people know who I am. Our music is very important because it helps the community come together, to see each other at parties and when someone listens to it they feel like they're in Afghanistan. Also, for our children who will grow up in the U.K, our music is very important. Through it, they will understand what we had before in our country.
