'In Afghanistan music was affected by the political situation and was banned by the Taliban.'

How I came to this music:

Music is everything in my life. It is the important thing, I have it like other people have a job.

When I was a child the music I heard was called hamator; it's like Afghan pop and my favourite singer was Ahmed Zahir. He sang about life, love and nature; everything. He's the most famous singer in Afghanistan and everybody likes him. He's not alive at the moment.

Abdul GhafooriWhen I was about 16 -17 years old I started playing the accordian. My family didn't play music so I taught myself. I just played for private enjoyment, not at weddings or concerts. In Afghanistan music was affected by the political situation and was banned by the Taliban.

The instrument I play is the harmonium. It comes from India but has been used in Afghanistan for a very long time and it is very famous. Every singer plays with a harmonium and tabla. To play you have to practice every day, every night but, if you have interest and hope, I think that no instrument is difficult.
