Mae Martin

Joke-teller and songwriter Mae Martin opens up about her addiction to baked potatoes.

Who are you and what can we expect from your performance?

I developed a fairly serious addiction to baked potatoes while in Edinburgh this year...
Mae Martin

I am Mae Martin. I tell jokes, sing songs and just generally try to get along with people so that I can get invited to their parties.

You’ve been plucked from the Edinburgh Fringe and popped onto Radio 4. Is there anything you’ve had to do to make your performance work for the airwaves?

I've had to cut out all the mime and lose the puppetry portion of the show (just kidding guys). I am so excited to hear how the songs sound on the radio and am relieved not to have to worry about my hair, which is usually a major concern.

Would you like to be involved with radio in the future?

I'd love to continue to appear on the radio, who wouldn't?! I've often phoned in to late-night UFO-related radio shows in the past and wouldn't mind hosting one one day... Who should I speak to about getting this sorted?

Speaking of the Fringe, can you tell us any stories from this year’s festival?

I developed a fairly serious addiction to baked potatoes while in Edinburgh this year and could use some advice on how to break the habit.

A highlight of the festival was definitely a late-night excursion to Greyfriars cemetery, where a young Scottish boy approached me and offered to introduce me and some friends to the ghost of "Stuart Mckenzie". He called out to the ghost for about 10 minutes, then collapsed on the ground, lay there comatose for about 45 seconds, claimed he had been pushed by Stuart the ghost, and then chased us out of the cemetery. It couldn't have been better or more surreal.

Did you see anyone at the festival that you think we should investigate?

Oyster Eyes, Amy Hoggart, Jamie Demetriou, Sheeps and so many others. Also there was a great busker who played Whitney Houston covers on the xylophone under a bridge.

Edinburgh aside, is there anything else we might recognise you from?

As I write this I'm on the way back from filming a stand-up segment on Russell Howard's Good News and if you've lived in Canada you might have seen me on TV talking about how much I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also you can usually find me eating baked potatoes at the cafe in Springfield Park.

Finally, let’s have the all-important ‘careers talk’... Where do you see yourself in five years?

Masterminding the Spice Girls' reunion tour.
