Jonny & the Baptists

Jonny, Amy and Paddy discuss their love of chicken, Phil Jupitus and slipping on puddles.

Who are you and what can we expect from your performance?

You'll probably recognise our hair from your dreams.
Jonny and the Baptists

We are Jonny & The Baptists (Jonny, Paddy and Amy). We do comedy songs inspired by real life, the news, and whatever soup Jonny happens to have made that day.

You’ve been plucked from the Edinburgh Fringe and dropped onto Radio 4. Is there anything you’ve had to do to make your performance work for the airwaves?

We have had to drop a few swears and visual gags (along with our extensive interpretive mime work), but we think we should translate over the airwaves, giving an accurate representation of the style and diversity of our work.

Would you like to be involved with radio in the future? Are there any shows you’d like to be part of?

Absolutely. , , , . Amy really wants to get in with the boys on  but perhaps for different reasons.

Speaking of the Fringe, can you tell us any stories from this year’s festival?

Paddy slipped on a puddle when coming onstage at Marcus Brigstocke's Early Edition. We did our set (he's a trooper) and then had to rush to A&E, where he was healed by the lovely people at Edinburgh Royal Hospital. We had to take two days off, so we wrote a Band Aid-inspired ballad ('God Bless the NHS') and got our wonderful friends to join in: our video included Mitch Benn, Josie Long, Marcus Brigstocke, Mark Watson, Cariad Lloyd, The Beta Males and many more. It was joyous.

We also had the honour of performing our song 'Quentin Blake' at ACMS with Phil Jupitus dancing behind us dressed as an 'off-centre clown. As the song ended he shared a tender kiss with Jonny. It was one of the best moments of our lives, let alone the Fringe.

Did you see any other acts at the festival that you think we should investigate?

The Beta Males. What an act – high energy, joyous, sketch storytelling. The nicest people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting and performing with.

Edinburgh aside, is there anything else we might recognise you from?

Jonny was in acclaimed double act 'The Roaring Boys' (big in Norway and France), Amy was in CITV’s ‘Harry's Mad’ (Series from 1994-1995) and Paddy used to busk at King's Cross. You'll probably recognise our hair from your dreams.

Finally, let’s have the all-important ‘careers talk’... Where do you see yourself in five years?

With a Nando's Black Card. If success isn’t about free chicken, then it’s not about success.

Keep up with Jonny & the Baptists
