Hailing from a musical family, Reuben has had to fight for practice space since he was seven, when he first started to play the piano. After brief flirtations with the violin and with opera, performing as a boy soprano in Mozart’s Magic Flute, at 11 Reuben was fortunate enough to gain a place at Chetham’s Music School in Manchester. Here he was encouraged to improvise and compose and collaborated with both students and established musicians.
Taking his first jazz lessons at 15 with Les Chisnall, Reuben is now studying as a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music where composition lies at the heart of his love for music, and incorporates influences ranging from Messiaen to Mehldau. For the last three years he has worked with the National Youth Jazz Collective and has performed in venues including Vortex Jazz Club and Kings Place, London.
