An Nowodhow - Read along with the news in Kernewek

PRESENTER James听

Patients from the Isles of Scilly visiting the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro often face difficulty in finding accomodation for themselves and their families during their stay, but a charity is purchasing a house in Truro that it its hoped make this much easier.

Like in English, a number of different words are used for the islands. Enesow Syllan is 鈥榯he Scilly Isles鈥. You鈥檒l also hear 鈥榓n enesek鈥 - adding -ek to enys (鈥榠sland鈥) makes a word meaning 鈥榓n abundance of鈥, so 鈥榓n enesek鈥 means 鈥榯he archepelago鈥 or more simply, 鈥榯he islands鈥. The islands are also referred to as just 鈥楽yllan鈥 鈥 this is equivalent to simply saying 鈥楽cilly鈥 in English.

The Cornish this week is read by Duncan McIntosh:

Thank you and good morning.

Patients from the Isles of Scilly and their family members may soon be able to stay close to the Royal Cornwall Hospital before, during and after treatment.

The Island Haven charity said it had fundraised enough money to buy a five-bedroom house within walking distance of the hospital in Truro.

The house in Tresawls Road will be converted to offer four en-suite double-bedrooms, a communal kitchen and lounge, as well as a small garden and car parking.

Currently, islanders have to find and pay for accommodation, which can be difficult in the peak tourist season.

The new accommodation would be available for islanders undergoing longer-term outpatient treatment, for friends and family accompanying patients during emergency treatment and for patients discharged overnight or at weekends when traveling home to the islands is impossible.

The Island Haven started fundraising for a property in 2019. It hopes to have the house available by the end of 2024.

PRESENTER James:

In our next story, we hear about plans to demolish one of Cornwall鈥檚 tallest apartment blocks and replace it with new affordable apartments.

In Cornish the word ending -adow ending is used in lots of words and is roughly equivalent to -able. Examples are 鈥榢evadow鈥 鈥 鈥榓vailable鈥, kemeradow 鈥 acceptable, and duryadow durable. So, you can see if you can pick out the word for 鈥榓ffordable鈥 used throughout this story. Here鈥檚 Duncan again with the Cornish:

A housing association has revealed plans to replace one of Cornwall's tallest buildings with affordable flats.

Residents of Fountain Court in Penzance were told in October 2022 that they had to move out of their accommodation.

The building has 22 sheltered housing flats for people aged over 55.

DMA Architects has submitted a pre-application on behalf of LiveWest for advice from Cornwall Council's planning department, with the aim of a full application to demolish the building and replace it with 21 affordable apartments.

The proposed new flats would be lower than the existing building.

Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Councillor for Penzance East, said he had asked LiveWest to replace the same number of affordable flats lost with new ones and that he was pleased they had done so.

PRESENTER James:

You hopefully heard the word for affordable 鈥 affordyadow in that story.

And finally this week, a nurse from Cornwall has chosen International Women鈥檚 Day to share news of her MBE awarded earlier this month for services to Nursing.

The story mentions that for a time she worked in Gloucestershire. There are Cornish names for a quite a few places throughout the rest of the UK, such Karesk (Exeter), Loundres (London), Rysoghen (Oxford), and, in this story Gloucester (Kerlos), which in this story appears as Pow Kerlos (Gloucester-shire).

A nurse from Cornwall has praised all "courageous" and "purposeful" women after collecting her MBE.

Charity Gladstone, who works for Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, was named in the King's New Year's Honours list for services to nursing.听

She collected the honour from Buckingham Palace earlier in March.

Gladstone, who came to the UK from Malawi in 2000, dedicated the award to her late mother.

The trust said she was only the third person from Malawi to receive the honour.

She chose International Women's Day to share photos of the special occasion.

In 2000, She joined the NHS in Birmingham where she worked in critical care.

In 2018, she continued her career in Cornwall and played a "vital role" in the county during the Covid-19 pandemic.

After a time in Gloucestershire she returned to Cornwall in July to start a new role as an advanced nurse practitioner in Cornwall.听

She also the chair of the trust's equality, diversity and inclusion network.
