Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

I saw this family. On a cliff coastal walk, I鈥檇 paused for breath 鈥 I鈥檇 walked uphill for two minutes 鈥 and this extended family passed by. Different ages, walking different speeds.

Ahead, the two youngest ran with a dog, squabbling about who got to hold the lead. 鈥淵ou鈥檝e had it longer!鈥 鈥淚鈥檝e only just started!鈥 鈥淟et鈥檚 both hold it...鈥 The poor hound was strangled this way and that. Their manoeuvres were far from orchestrated.

Just behind, two teenagers rolled their eyes at them 鈥 then moaned about a party they, like, didn鈥檛 want to go to anyway? And apparently he was there, and, like, what was he doing there anyway, and like... well for people who said 鈥榣ike鈥 a lot, they didn鈥檛 like much.

Behind them, fortysomething parents overheard the teenagers. Dad said: 鈥淭hey think 迟丑别测鈥檝别 got worries. Wait till they discover mortgages. And MOTs. And...鈥

Finally came the grandparents, who muttered: 鈥淢ortgages...? Wait till their knees stop working. Then they鈥檒l have something to worry about.鈥

If great-grandparents had followed, I might鈥檝e heard: 鈥淜nees? What they worrying about knees for?鈥 Maybe they鈥檇 add their worries... or maybe they鈥檇 decide best not, and just enjoy the sun.

Zoomed-out, each generation鈥檚 burdens seemed amusing or irrelevant to the next. Truth is, when you鈥檙e in it, up close, it matters. But a great woman once sang: it鈥檚 funny how some distance makes everything seem small...

Jesus鈥 Sermon on the Mount said don鈥檛 worry about your life, food or clothes. Flowers don鈥檛 care what they鈥檙e going to wear... The cold never bothered them anyway. Alright, that鈥檚 a bit Jesus and a bit from someone Elsa.

Mortgages, parties, who drags the dog 鈥 they matter, to us. But now and then, things like Children In Need help us appreciate that others鈥 worries may be greater.

I grew up in and out of Great Ormond Street Hospital, born funny, with an 鈥榦utie bladder鈥. I knew children there who鈥檇 love that walk 鈥 to be simply worried about who鈥檚 dragging the dog, or what party they鈥檙e invited to. Parents who鈥檇 give anything to just worry about mortgages, or their knees, rather than their children鈥檚 wellbeing. My hospital memories were brilliant: fun, visitors, outings. Today鈥檚 children deserve good memories too.聽

As we all walk through life, maybe like that family, we can help each other on the uphill climbs, and like them, put the children first.
