Pause For Thought
It’s half-way through Passover, the great festival of liberation. In the middle of all the celebrations, we pause to do something very simple – count the days. Each day we mention how many days have passed until the early-summer festival of Pentecost – Shavuot, in seven weeks’ time. Today is day three! It’s a little like the couple I met with last week who are getting married next month. When I asked them how the preparations are going, they said with great excitement – 43 days to go. But I think our count is more about focusing on the here and now and realising the importance of every second. It’s easy to forget that the moments in which we live become days, weeks, years.Â
Time is the most precious commodity we have, but we sometimes treat it as though it’s unlimited. But it’s not. I recently realised that even if we are blessed to live for a century, that’s only 36,500 days, which seems so little. The 17th-century Spanish author Baltasar Gracian captured this beautifully. He said: All that really belongs to us is time; even someone who has nothing else has that. An ancient Jewish source – the Book of Psalms – tackles this head-on. The psalmist dwells on the reality that our lives are brief, filled with challenges and they pass us by so quickly.Â
But then he asks God to help us to count our days wisely. I think he means that when we remember that the clock is ticking for all of us, we will be more likely to use each day to the full. I think one way to do that is by being more mindful of the passage of time by counting the days.Â
When I was a kid, I loved the Sesame Street character Count von Count. He would say, ‘Greetings. I am the Count. They call me the Count, because I LOVE to count... things’. Sometimes, like that friendly Muppet vampire, we should think about counting days. If we’re having a bad day at work, we’ve had a bust-up with our partner, or the school term seems to be lasting for ever, we might feel tempted to wish today, this week, or even this month away. But l believe we should resist, as every moment is precious, every day is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, one we will never have again.
