Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Tony Miles, Reverend at Methodist Central Hall Westminster:
Matt, my prayers, of course, are with those mourning in Sri Lanka today, that following evil acts of terror, goodness will rise up and ultimately triumph over evil. In that spirit, every Easter at my Church, we take a stark wooden cross and transform its ugliness into a thing of beauty - decorating it with colourful flowers. It becomes for us a glorious symbol of hope. Now Holy Week and Easter are busy for us clergy. On this Bank Holiday, to quote that wise sage, Steve Wright, it’s time for some ‘serious chillin’, with no G!’
Yes, time for pondering life’s great mysteries, like why it takes just one match to start a forest fire, but a whole box to light an old barbecue? Or to ‘get away from it all’ to explore the countryside or garden centre, naïvely forgetting everyone’s had the same idea. Yet grabbing some sun rays and connecting with our environment can be restorative. I can understand why people can feel nearer to God in the garden than they do in church. And you don’t have to be a tree hugger, or even religious, to be spiritually inspired by nature.
My Dad has a fantastic garden. It’s his pride and joy. The trouble is, he lives with Parkinson’s. I’m not sure for whom I should feel sorrier for, my dad who can no longer care for the garden himself, or his gardener who has to live up to Dad’s high expectations. But still, Dad finds joy seeing his garden revive each spring. I find it interesting that the Bible begins and ends with the mention of a garden and tells how some of Jesus’ followers witnessed he’d risen from the dead in a garden too.
Christians believe Easter is about new life! Martin Luther, the German Monk and reformer, is credited as writing the ‘Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.’ Whether I’ve an impressive garden like Dad’s, a window box, or just a few pot plants around my home, I hope I’ll always tend my patch ever-mindful of my wider responsibility. That’s to be a caretaker of the environment and my relationships, so that future generations may have a beautiful and peaceful world to chill in too.
