Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Rae Duke, Religion and Ethics teacher and broadcaster.
鈥淎re you a natural blonde?鈥 is a question I鈥檝e fended off plenty of times in my life. The answer, a little on the defensive side is, 鈥測es鈥 kind of鈥︹ Whilst I was fair as a kid, once I entered my teens I did as many others did and sought out the help of some hair lightener; oh how I loved that hydrogen peroxide laden, hairdryer activated stuff!听
But the day before my 18th birthday party I, rather boldly decided to dye my hair dark brown 鈥 it was an amalgamation of finally giving into the fascination of what it would be like to transform myself into a brunette, (鈥渨ould university interviews go better?鈥 I remember, hilariously, pondering) and wanting to mark this new adult phase in some outward way. Now this desire to renew ourselves is one that the beauty and fashion industries thrive off. We buy a new shirt or lipstick I believe, not simply to acquire new things but for that temporary, yet addictive hit of feeling new and shiny.听
There鈥檚 a verse in a letter by St Paul that says; 鈥淭hough outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day.鈥 On first hearing it sounds mad. As days, months and years roll by surely the very opposite of renewal is taking place? But Paul, writing to Christians facing much hardship at the time, was reaffirming the life-transforming power of that first Easter Sunday; communicating this sense that whilst our physical selves might head south over the course of our lives, the other non-material essence of us doesn鈥檛 have to, but rather can be renewed on a daily basis.听
So just to return to my hair overhaul of yesteryear鈥 predictably, for an 18 year old getting involved with a DIY colouring kit many shades away from her original - it was a disaster. I re-emerged from the bathroom completely unrecognizable. 鈥業ced Mocha鈥, it turns out, wasn鈥檛 the outward renewal I needed. But not being one to miss out on the joy of a makeover, I鈥檝e simply stuck to the reliable talents of a hairdresser to banish those roots and make new my blonde barnet ever since!
