Sophie Ellis-Bextor sings live in the studio and gives us a sneak peek of her new album Familia. Plus Chris announces Anastacia as the tenth contestant to join Strictly Come Dancing and Reverend Richard Coles has Friday's Pause for Thought.

Typically English scene: on holiday in deepest Suffolk, I get up to early to drive through glowing fields of just-cut wheat, past spinneys where woodpigeons coo, and ancient churches stand under wide, cloud-flecked skies鈥� desperately seeking wifi.

A supermarket, on the edge of town, provided, but it was not yet open, so I parked in its empty car park, to wait. And then another driver arrived, circled a couple of times, and parked right next to me - so closely that she couldn鈥檛 easily open the door and made rather a pantomime of struggling to get out as if somehow I had boxed her in. I wound down the window and suggested she park further off, but she just snatched her charity bag-for-life from under the Labrador and glared at me. I鈥檒l leave you to guess which supermarket.

I remembered once in the camper van parking on the edge of a wild beach in the west of Scotland, miles from civilisation and in the morning finding another parked so close their radio woke us up.

What鈥檚 that about? Some ancient herding instinct, a primitive impulse that makes us circle our wagons? But it鈥檚 not very typical, I think, of the English, who normally keep a respectful distance. A friend of mine once answered the door to a neighbour who said, 鈥淚鈥檓 terribly sorry to bother you, and do forgive the intrusion, but I think your chimney鈥檚 on fire鈥�.

听

Perhaps on a deeper level than stereotypes allow, we find contradictory impulses. Church history is full of examples of people seeking God by retreating from the world,

Up a mountain, or in a misty glen, or beside a tinkling river. That鈥檚 partly why I take off to deepest Suffolk, or remotest Scotland; but, in truth, I have found God to be no less present in the tumult and confusions of cities, where people jostle alongside each other, making a living, competing for space, arguing over parking spaces. In my father鈥檚 house, said Jesus, there are many mansions; maybe heaven will be more like a crowded city than a sunny meadow. And perhaps the challenge for those who want to get there is found just as readily in the city鈥檚 hubbub as the hermit鈥檚 cave?
