Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Mo Farah's 10,000 metre race at the Rio Olympics at the weekend had many of us on the edge of our seats.
A tumble early in the race could well have ended his dream of retaining his Olympic title, and he was pushed to his limit on the last lap when he was overtaken. Farah鈥檚 sprint finish though was enough to clinch the Gold.

As he came over the finish line he was clearly exhausted.聽 However some reporters seem to misinterpret Farah's finishing 聽line action-one broadsheet describing how he 'Collapsed聽 to the floor and lay there prostrate'.

But for Muslims that action of prostrating yourself is a mark of prayer not tiredness. It's called Sujud, and millions of Muslims do it every day - putting one's head to the floor and reciting a prayer glorifying God. It's an act of complete surrender and humility, and is the reason I became a Muslim back in 1988.

A friend had invited me to her mosque to listen to a talk. Afterwards I had helped her tidy up. Just before we left she said, "I just need to say my prayers". I watched her stand, then bow, stand and then drop down into prostration.

My grandmother had taught me to pray on my knees, but this was something extraordinary. This was an outward sign of what I'd been trying to achieve in my life to this point - surrendering myself completely to The Divine. All my studies of religions in general, and Islam in particular, seem to crystallise at that moment, and I decided to become a Muslim.

I can't speak for athletes such as Mo Farah as to why they mark their victories by going into prostration. What I do know is that I find great peace by praying in this way, and of taking moments in my day to reflect on my personal life, and the universe of which I am part; giving myself over in complete surrender to something greater than myself. 聽

As for Mo Farah, he looks set to be running in the 5000 metre final this weekend. I know I will be on the edge of my seat screaming at my TV screen, willing him to win. And I do so hope to see his victory, his prostration, and of course, his famed MoBot!
