7 actors who really want to be the next Doctor Who

A leading UK bookmaker has suspended all betting on actor Kris Marshall becoming the next now that Peter Capaldi has hung up the keys to the Tardis.

Is Kris Marshall going to be the next Doctor Who?

Betting has been suspended on the Death In Paradise actor taking over from Peter Capaldi.

But just because lots of people think he's a surefire bet to take on the role doesn't mean anything is final. The people who make the show decide who plays Doctor Who, not the people who take the bets.

Besides, Kris still has plenty of competition from other major stars who fancy taking on the role. Here's 7 actors who would like to take their turn as a Time Lord when the show returns...

Eddie Redmayne

The Fantastic Beasts actor he was up for stepping into the Tardis when he visited Radio 1 in November and said he believed he already looks a bit like a Time Lord.

"Would I do it? Yeah! It's a great show," said Eddie.

"I do see the resemblance. I see the scarf, I see the coat, I see the bow tie.

"I'm also a huge fan of those actors, love Matt Smith."

Danny Dyer

Could you imagine Doctor Who being a bit of a lad? Well, Danny Dyer certainly can - and he wants to bring his own cockney charm to the show when it returns with a new star.

I could do it easy. I鈥檇 keep my accent too
Danny Dyer

"I’d be interested in [Doctor Who]. I could see myself in the scarf and all that," he told The Daily Star in early 2017.

"I think I could do it easy. I’d keep my accent too."

What's rhyming slang for a Dalek?

Harry Melling

Harry may not be a household name but most of us will recognise the young actor from his role as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter movies.

Getting Doctor Who in the family again would be great
Harry Melling

He is the grandson of Patrick Troughton, who played the second Doctor Who 50 years ago.

“I would love to be the next new Doctor," he told The Daily Express in 2016.

"I am not the person in charge of that but I would love to keep it in the family.

"It probably won’t happen as I might need to be a bit older. I’ve really enjoyed doing theatre but getting Doctor Who in the family again would be great."

Hayley Atwell

Hayley has won fans with her role as Agent Peggy Carter in the Avengers movies and her spin-off TV series and she is keen to do more sci-fi TV shows, namely Doctor Who.

In 2015 she was asked on Twitter if she would want to star in the show and she replied simply: "I'd like to BE Doctor Who."

Brian Blessed

Doctor Who is known for its quiet moments as much as huge sci-fi adventures. Brian Blessed isn't known for 'quiet' but he reckons he's got the acting chops to take on the role.

"I would love to play the Doctor, absolutely," he told Calibre magazine in 2016.

He also revealed he was approached in 1966 to play the Doctor, following the first actor William Hartnel.

"I was actually in talks with the producers, who said, ‘We’re very keen for you to be the Doctor, to follow William Hartnel, and we’d like you to play him very young," he added.

"You’ve got a very vivid imagination, Brian. You can be quite normal and then also very, very eccentric."

Tim Roth

The Reservoir Dogs (and scary ) actor revealed his interest in starring as the Doctor during an Ask Me Anything interview on Reddit.

When asked if he wanted to play the Doctor, he said simply: "OK. If this is the casting director, I'm all for it."

Anthony Head

Anthony played librarian Giles in iconic TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the respected actor is interested in stepping back onto the small screen if the Doctor Who producers come calling.

"Nobody’s asked, but I wouldn’t say no," he said on Good Morning in March 2017.

"Would anybody say no?"
