Matthew, aged 6, had his first wobbly tooth. He had been waiting for this day to come for so long, but now it was here he actually didn't want his tooth to fall out.
He had watched all of his friends and his big brother loose their teeth. They had all told him about how the tooth fairy gave them money. So he wobbled and wibbled and wobbled some more but it was like a hand was keeping it in.
He tried everything to get it out. He brushed it hard, he brushed it softly, he ate an apple, tried pulling it and wiggling it with his tongue. But nothing ever worked. Everyone thought his tooth was magic and would stay in forever.
One day his Mam said "Enough is enough, we're going to the dentist!" Matthew didn't like the sound of that.
He went to bed that night thinking about how to get his wobbly, wobbly tooth out before the trip to the dreaded dentist. He eventually drifted off to sleep. He felt something tingling in his tooth. He quickly felt his magical tooth to make sure it hadn't disappeared but when he did he felt something tapping him on his finger. He froze with shock. What was it? Was it his imagination or was there someone living in his tooth.
He pulled his finger from his mouth and there stood a little man. He gasped with fright. The little man waved at him then whispered "please don't lose this tooth it's my home." Matthew didn't know what to say. He was bewildered. Was this the reason his tooth wouldn't come out? The man jumped up onto his nose so Matthew could see him better. He just looked like an ordinary man who had been shrunk down. He explained to Matthew that he had been living in his tooth since Matthew was 1 years old, and how much fun it had been, and how lovely all the other people were who lived inside his other teeth.
Matthew looked shocked to find out that there was more of them living inside his mouth.
The man told Matthew he knew this day would come, that he would have to move out into someone else's tooth, but he'd hoped he might of been able to stay for a little while longer and that's why it was so hard for his tooth to come out. But the man told Matthew that he would move out that night and with that he jumped down and slid back into his mouth.
The sunshine woke Matthew early the next morning and he sat straight up in bed touched his tooth and it dropped straight out! He couldn't believe it. Then he remembered his strange dream, had there really been someone living in his tooth or was it all just a dream?
