The
Vines, 1920s

Albert B. Vines opened the pub in 1867. In 1907, Walkers took over
and rebuilt it in this exuberant baroque style. The architect was
a very interesting character; Walter Thomas. He also designed the
Phil. pub and had a hand in designing the Crown.
He
was quite an interesting character, a jovial man, of large proportions,
always immaculately dressed, wore spats and made a great marriage.
He married into the Lewis family and they gave him the task of designing
the Lewis鈥檚 store, the store that was damaged in the blitz.
He
also designed the Coffee House in Wavertree. Alderman Berkley Walker
took this place over in 1907. Walker was the man who gave us our
famous art gallery in 1877. The Vines itself is one of the only
pubs in the British Isles that can boast its own art collection.
