"It was first opened in 1830 in Lime Street. In those days it was on the other side of Lime Street to where we are now. That was visited by a lot of clients from the Empire Theatre and places like that.

"Then the Americans came over in the first war and they took to it and they called it the American Bar. But it was known locally as the Yankee Bar because we seemed to get a lot of clientele from Americans, foreigners and seamen.

"It was very popular in the last war although it had a reputation for a different clientele. The ladies used to visit it a lot, looking for the seamen. This was the place where the likes of Maggie May knocked about. Most of her clients, GIs, American merchant navy, sailors, they all used this, maybe for the same reasons. It quietened down just after the war. It鈥檚 known now throughout the world as McHales Irish - American Bar.
