Aberdeen's Herring Fleet

Steam boats were successful for a number of reasons; they were longer than the traditional sailboats, and therefore could carry a larger haul.

The most obvious advantage of steam power was that the fishermen were no longer so dependent on favourable weather conditions and tides to reach the fishing grounds, but a further advantage was the speed of the boats.

Because boats reached the fishing grounds more quickly than they would have done in a sailboat, they therefore had more time to devote to fishing.

They could also get back to shore more quickly, which meant fresher fish, and the fresher the fish, the greater the price at market.

In 1850, the railway link to Aberdeen was opened, and overnight fish trains ran from Aberdeen to Billingsgate Market in London.
