From cradle to grave: willows and basketmaking in Somerset |
|
The Somerset Levels and Moors are “willow country”, an atmospheric wetland where willows, the genus Salix, have naturally flourished for thousands of years. In prehistory sticks and branches from indigenous willow trees were woven into sturdy panels and containers and they were certainly cultivated as a crop by the Romans. They have been a valuable natural resource for people living in Somerset who have invented a myriad different uses for them, reflecting changes in society and events across the world. More...
