Problems caused by growing conditions
Frost damage Plants affected: New growth.
Symptoms: Young stems and leaves shrivel and turn black.
Prevention/Control: If a frost is forecast, drape plants in several layers of horticultural fleece or newspaper. Don鈥檛 plant out tender plants until after the last frost. In most areas you are safe to plant in late May or early June.
Wind damage Plants affected: New growth and delicate plants, such as Japanese maples.
Symptoms: Similar to frost damage.
Prevention/Control: Create shelter by erecting a windbreak or planting a hedge.
Wilting Plants affected: All plants.
Symptoms Drooping leaves. Confusingly this can be because of either a lack of water or too much water.
Prevention/Control: Investigate the cause and either apply water or allow plants to dry out.
