Blackfly Plants affected: Broad beans and elder bushes are firm favourites.
Symptoms: Infestations of large, black greenfly clustered round the tips of shoots.
Prevention/Control: Nip out broad beans' shoot tips as soon as you see the first blackfly. Prune out colonies on elder bushes. Spray with soft soap or a pesticide containing pirimicarb.
Whitefly Plants affected: Primarily a greenhouse pest, especially fond of fuchsias and tomatoes. It can also be bad on outdoor brassicas in summer and autumn.
Symptoms: Clouds of tiny, white triangular moths erupt from the underside of leaves when knocked. Black sooty mould may be seen on the leaves.
Prevention/Control: These are resistant to most pesticides so it鈥檚 best to use organic methods, such as biological control or yellow sticky traps. Plants with yellow flowers, such as French marigolds, can be planted between vulnerable plants to encourage the pests to attack these instead of the vulnerable plants.
